Sarayubala Devi:

Mother went to her paternal home on 26th February and returned to Calcutta just before DurgA pujA in September 1913. Round about that time I went to see her one evening and found a woman crying at her feet for initiation. Mother, however, appeared unwilling and said, "Did I not forbid you earlier? Why have you come? I am unwell, I cannot consent now."

The more she insisted, the more annoyed Mother became, "You think only about yourselves, you care for the mantra only. You get it, but what about the consequences?"

The woman still insisted. Everyone present felt disgusted. At last Mother said, "See me some time later."

The woman said, "Then commission one of your devoted sons."

"Suppose they refuse," said Mother.

"To think," said the woman, "that they will disregard you!"

"They may in such a case."

As her importunities still continued, Mother said, "Well, I shall ask Khoka (Swami Subodhananada), he will initiate you."

Still the woman said, "It would have been better if you yourself agreed; it depends on your mere wish." With this she drew out a ten-rupee note and said, "Kindly accept this and give orders for whatever will be needed," whereupon Mother grew indignant and asked her if she thought she could be tempted with money.

"I am not to be tempted with money. Take it back, will you?" And she left the place. In the end it was settled, at the woman's humble prayer, that she should come for her initiation on the day of Ashtami pujA.

After she left, Mother called me to her and apologized sweetly for neglecting me......
