A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"

A little later Mother went downstairs to the wash-house and I accompanied her with a lamp. This part of the garden was somewhat lonely. There were rows of crotons on either side of the pathway. Mother said affectionaetely, "You have been so busy with your duties, poor dear, that you couldn't sit down for a moment. Come and see me soon, bring your mother as well." My mother had come on a visit and had been so fortunate as to see Holy Mother without having to make any effort.
The moment of farewell arrived. Mother did not wish to ride in a car, because once when she had been on her way to see the chariot festival at Mahesh, they had run over a dog. But Baghbazar was a long way off and it would be very late and uncomfortable too unless they went by car. In the end she agreed. She bowed to the Master several times, gave us her blessings and mounted the car.
Once I went at night.....During our conversation she asked, "Listen, dear, when God first created man, He endowed him with the spirit of goodness. As a result, men were born with wisdom and it did not take them long to realise that the world was an ephemeral thing. Immediately they took the name of God and set out to meditate on Him and by His grace were liberated from the bonds of life. God thought, this will not do, this is not the way to make them play the game of life. In the end along with the spirit of goodness, He mingled in profuse quantities, the spirit of materialism and that of vanity. Now the game of life went on with a swing!" Here she quoted an attractive Rhyme about the way the universe came into being....
