Swami Arupananda:

Udbodhan, 8 February, 1912: To Mother: "Did you ever stay at Dakshineswar alone?"

"Sometimes alone, sometimes my mother-in-law would be there. Golap, Gaurdasi and the others would come sometimes. We cooked, lived, ate, all in that tiny room. We cooked for the Master. You see he often suffered from indigestion. He could not stand the rich food given as offerings to the Goddess. We also cooked for the devotees. Latu would be there. He came after a disagreement with Ram Datta. The Master said, 'Here is a nice boy. He will knead your dough for you.' The cooking went on day and night.

"For instance, Ram Datta would arrive and shout as he got down from the carriage, 'I would like to have chApAtis and cholAr dAl today.'

"As soon as I heard him I would start cooking. We used six or eight pounds of flour for chApAtis every day. Rhakal lived there We often prepared khichuri for him. Suren Mitter contributed ten rupees every month for the devotees. The older Gopal did the marketing. There was dance, song, kirtana, meditation and trances night and day. There was a bamboo partiton before us, in which we made holes and stood at them, watching. All that standing brought about my rheumatism."
