Swami Ishanananda:

One day Mother said, "What a thick jungle; I should not wonder if a bear should start out one day." I said, "But Mother, I never saw a bear this side." In fact, however, we heard after a day or two that on a meadow of the village of Desra a big bear had fatally mauled an old woman while she was picking up cowdung, and that the bear too had been shot dead.

At evening that day Mother said, "So you heard what the bear did today! They say that it has killed Ambika's mother-in-law. Did you not assert that there is no bear in these parts?"

At evenings, Mother used to drink some water along with some sweets. She would also offer me these when I reached the tree. She would say, "If after a whole day's labour one drinks some water along with some sweets, one feels very much refreshed. Then the mind gets easily fixed in japa, meditation, or in any other work."
