30 September, 1918:
Dr. Kanjilal came with his wife (to celebrate MahAshtami).....
Everybody from Balaram Babu's house also came to worship Mother. I went in last of all. As I finished my worship and was about to wrap my cloth around her, Mother said, "I shall wear this. One has to wear a new cloth today, anyway."
With this she put it on and tears came to my eyes. It was an ordinary piece of cloth, others had given her far more costly ones. I was her poor daughter. Her great affection for me made me feel humble. Mother was saying, "Look, dear, what a lovely border."
A young woman dressed in the SannyAsin's ochre cloth, worshipped Mother and placed two rupees at her feet. Mother said, "What is this? Why should you too offer money, you who have taken to the sannyAsin's ochre and carry rudrAksha beads!"
Then she asked the girl, "Where did you take your vows?"
"I have not taken any vows," the girl answered.
"So you have assumed this dress without taking any vows or receiving any communion?" Mother said, "You have not done well. This dress is noble in itself, even I feel like folding my hands together and bowing to the ground. One should never do such a thing, one should first have some realization. Everyone will come to bow down at your feet, and you must first earn the merit to receive that adoration."
"I would like to receive initiation from your own hands," the young woman said.
"How can that be?" Mother said.
Still the girl continued to plead with her. Golap-Ma too gave a little support and I noticed Mother relenting to some extent. She said, "Well, we shall see."
