Sarayubala Devi:

May, 1914:

As the day advanced, we watched for Mother's arrival (at Ballyganj); at last the blessed moment came. The minute we heard the sound of the carriage all of us went downstairs. When the carriage stopped, we saw Mother looking at us, her eyes filled with love. As soon as she stepped down, we eagerly took the dust off her feet.

Golap-Ma, the youngest aunt (i.e. Mother's crazy sister-in-law), Nalini-didi, Radhu, and four or five monks had accompanied her. We took Mother and seated her upstairs and bowed to her. She inquired, "Have you had your meal? I tried to be as quick as possible, but somehow could not manage to get here earlier than this."

She touched my chin and then kissed her own fingers. I could not sit near her but had to go downstairs to see to the refreshments. They were playing a gramophone upstairs. I was able to take a few minutes off from my duties and rush upstairs. Mother was delighted with the gramophone and wondered at the marvellous machine! She was as pleased as a child!

It was summer and very hot. Mother was lying on a fine mat in the veranda and the others were sitting around her, They had given her a marble bowl of ice-water, from which she had sipped from time to time. When she saw me she cried, "Come and have some ice-water, dear." I took some of the water that she had consecrated by her touch and ran down to the kitchen again. I was trying to be as quick as possible, but nothing seemed to get done!
