A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"
(available at all Vedanta Centres)
"Does the Master really eat the food which is offered?" I asked Mother.
"Do you think I do not notice whether the Master eats or not?" she answered. "he sits for his food and eats."
"You really see it?"
"Yes, he eats some, but he simply looks at some. As a matter of fact do you ever relish all things at all times, or everybody's food? It's just like that. It depends on one's intensity of feeling and devotion. Devotion is the main thing."
"How will devotion come? A child doesn't even know its own mother if it is brought up by someone else."
"Yes, truly so. His grace is necessary. One must deserve His grace."
"How can there be any question of fitness for grace?" I protested. "Grace must come equally to all."
"One has to sit by the riverside and call on Him," Mother explained. "He will ferry across at the proper time."
"If everything occurs at the proper time, then where is the place for His grace?"
"Even so, don't you have to throw your line and wait for the fish when you go out angling?"
