Sarayubala Devi:

30 March 1920:

Just then news came of the arrival of Dr. Kanjilal and we all retired to the next room. The Doctor was examining Mother, when Radhu came in and said, "Just look at my hand. I hurt it on the iron post downstairs, the skin has been rubbed off in places and it is bleeding!"

Mandakini had dipped a dirty rag in castor-oil and bandaged her hand with it. The Doctor cried, "Take that off at once and wash the place with soap. One should never use such a filthy rag, blood-poisoning will set in immediately. There's poison in the very air of Calcutta."

With this he arose and left the room. Mother felt very sorry for Radhu. "Oh, the poor child is so badly hurt! My heart breaks for her. She has been unhappy from birth. She has no strength. Please ask Kanjilal to prescribe some medicine for her. God make her well."
