They (the mendicant women visitors) argued with her for some time and then gave up. Then they asked, "Where is your home?"Â
"Karmarpukur, in the Hooghly district."Â
"Give us your present address. We shall come now and then."Â
Mother asked someone to write down the address for them.
At Mother's direction I had given the boy a portion of the sweets they had brought. When they had departed, Mother said, "Why do women argue? Even the wisest of men have not found God through argument! Is God a subject for argument?"
My carriage arrived a little later and Mother cried, "Here's the rub; they are announcing the arrival of the carriage from Pataldanga. Why so early? Saying this she quickly arose and went to make the evening offerings. Later, she brought some of the sweets, a little consecrated water in a vessel, two betel leaves and called me aside.
Her tender attentions brought tears to me eyes. I wondered when I would see her again, as she would be leaving for Varanasi when the pujAs were over. She said affectionately, "Come again."....
