Sarayubala Devi:

14 May, 1911:

Mother was now about to go to the GangA for her bath, Golap-Ma was to accompany her. I took Mother's clothes and towel and went along with them.

She had just stepped into the river when it started to drizzle. After her bath, she gave a brahmin priest a banana, a mango, and a pice and said, "I offer the fruits, but may the rewards be yours." Alas! priest, you did not realize who gave you those things, nor the significance of the words you heard!.....

Mother took the dry clothes from my hands and later gave me her wet things and said, "Let us go now."

Golap-Ma led the way in front. Mother was between us, and I followed last. Mother carried a little pitcher of water from the GangA and poured out a little from it at the root of every banyan tree we passed and bowed....

When we reached home,...Golap-Ma went to the prayer room to put away the small pitcher of water she had brought from the GangA. There was a pitcher of water beside the water tank downstairs; Mother washed her feet there and said to me, "Your feet are muddy too, do wash them." I looked around for water, but she cried, "Why not take my pitcher?"

"But that water is sanctified by your touch," I protested.

She advised, "It will be quite proper if you first put a few drops of it on your head." My mind did not work as simply as hers. I answered, "How can that be?" I brought another vessel and washed from the cistern. Mother waited for me.

(to be continued....)
