Sarayubala Devi:

30 September, 1918:

MahAshtami Day:

We all rested after the midday meal.....Mother rose at four and the afternoon offerings were made. Rashbihari Maharaj came and said, "A European lady wishes to see you. She has been waiting downstairs for a long time."

When the lady arrived, Mother held out her hand saying, "Come." I then witnessed what Mother meant when she said, "When one goes to Rome, one does as the Romans do."

The Mother touched the young woman's face and kissed her own fingers. The lady knew Bengali and said, "I hope I have not disturbed you by coming here, I have been waiting a long while. I am in great distress. I have a daughter, a very good girl, who is seriously ill. So I came to pray for your compassion. Have mercy on her, that she may recover. She is such a good girl. I say 'a good girl', because there are not many among us. Most of our girls are bad, wicked, but I tell you truly, my daughter is not so. Have mercy on me."

"I shall pray for your daughter, she will get well," Mother consoled her.

At these words the lady felt reassured and said, "Then I need have no fear. If you say she will recover, she is sure to get well, there is no doubt about that, none whatever!" There was strength as well as faith in her words.

Filled with compassion, Mother said to Golap-Ma, "Give her one of the Master's flowers; go, bring a lotus." Golap-Ma fetched a bel leaf together with a lotus and put them in Mother's hands, holding them, she closed her eyes for a moment, then fixing her eyes on the Master she placed the flower in the lady's hand saying, "Stroke your daughter's head with this." The lady accepted the flower with folded hands and bowing at Mother's feet said, "What shall I do next?"

"Why, what need you do? Throw it into the GangA when it withers," Golap-Ma replied. "No, no," the lady cried, "how can I throw away God's own thing! I shall put it into a little bag made of new cloth and stroke my daughters head and body with it every day."

"Yes, do so," Mother said.

...The lady came to see Mother again, and was received with special favour. Mother gave her initiation and loved her very much. Her daughter recovered.
