Swami Ishanananda:

A young man named Mansa came to Mother with a great desire for initiation and the ochre robe (of renunciation). Mother granted his prayer gladly. With great elation he sat at evening in uncle Kali's drawing room and sang these two songs: "There's nothing else in this world; Mother ShyAmA is the only reality." "Throwing you in the crucible of my mind, O ShyAmA, I shall make a mental image of yours today."

Mother liked these very much. And Radhu, Maku, Nalini, one or two of the aunts, and some other women heard the songs sitting by her. One of the aunts remarked, "Sister-in-law (i.e. Mother) has turned that boy into a monk."

"Really so," joined in Maku, "What a way of doing things our aunt has! She is turning such fine boys into monks! Their parents brought them up at great sacrifice, and are now depending on them. They expect much of them. All that is now dashed to the ground. Now he will either go to Hrishikesh and live on alms or clean human excreta in the service of the sick (in the Ramakrishna Mission).

"To marry and lead a householder's life is also a meritorious path in this world to be sure. If you go on making monks like this, mahA-mAyA will get angry with you. If they want to be monks, let them be so by themselves. Why should you be an instrument in this, aunt?"

Mother then replied, "Maku, they are children of Light. They live on this earth pure as flowers. Can you tell me of anything happier than this? You have yourself seen the happiness that this world promises. You have experienced what happiness in a married life means. Don't you still feel ashamed to return to your husband again and again? What have you learnt by staying here with me all these days? Why this infatuation, this animal instinct? What happiness are you deriving?

"If you go to your husband again, I shall drive you away. Can't you imagine a holy living even in a dream? Can't you even now live as brother and sister? You want simply to live a pig's life. My very bone is getting scorched with the blast of your worldly life."

All hung down their heads in shame.
