Swami Ishanananda:

During that period, Ramlal-dada, Lakshmi-didi, and Ramlal-dada's daughter came one day to Mother from Dakshineswar while on their way to the celebration at Entally. Ramlal-dada saluted Mother and then went down to Sharat Maharaj. At the request of Mother and all the others, Lakshmi-didi sang a kirtana-song in a hushed tone, imitating at the same time with her mouth the sound of the khOl (mridanga which usually accompanies such kirtana).

The conversation turned to the birthplace of the Master, the proposed temple there, and other relevant matters. "When that temple comes up, will it be under our keeping?" asked Lakshmi-didi. "Their (Ramlal-dada's and Shibu-dada's) children will perform the worship and other rites and they will stay there, I hope."

"How can that be?" Mother objected. "These are monks and devotees. What do they care for caste? So many people will be coming from various countries - Europeans, Anericans and foreigners - who will stay there and partake of prasAda. We have to deal with all kinds of devotees, whereas you belong to the world. You have your society, the marriage of your sons and daughters, and other social obligations. How can you live with them?"

After a little more talk on the same line, Mother added, "They will build for you separate houses just like the present ones, but roofed with corrugated iron sheets (and not thatched, as at present), near the barn of the Yugis (of Karmarpukur) or somewhere to the west, where they will secure some land for you."

(to be continued....)
