A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"Â
(available at all Vedanta Centres)
The sister-in-law of Navasan said (to Mother), "All your sons are equal to you. But when one consults you about marriage, you advise marriage; and when one wants to renounce the world, you instruct him accordingly, lauding renunciation. Is it not rather proper for you to lead all along the path that is best for all?"
Mother replied, "Will a man with strong desire obey me even if I tell him not to run after it? And should I not help him a little who has, through his good merit, understood all this as a mere play of mAyA and has known Him to be the only Reality? Is there any end to miseries in this life?"
After some dispute among themselves, Nalini-didi (niece of Mother) asked Mother, "Aunt, will you please tell us what kind of false allegation is good!" Mother replied, "To talk of degrees of a false allegation!"Â
At the end of a little discussion on the same line, she said, "Well, an allegation about riches is good in a way. If somebody says to a man, 'You are rich.', he may outwardly show humility or dislike, but he feels very happy inside."
After this she added, "Let alone all this. Will you now tell me, what one should ask from God?"
Nalini-didi replied, "Why aunt, knowledge, devotion, and all that makes man happy in life - all these have to be prayed for."
Mother said, "To put it in one word, one should pray for desirelessness. For desire is the root of all evil, the cause of rebirth, and it is a hindrance in the path of liberation."
