A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"

As the disease lingered and weakened Mother's body, she could not keep sitting for long. But I noticed that she continued her japa even while lying down thus, and when I had to wake her up for something or other, she responded at the first call. When I asked, "Were you not asleep?" she would reply, "How can I help it, my son? The boys all come and solicit me earnestly for initiation. They get it and depart. But they don't make their japa regularly - why regularly, some do nothing at all. But since I have taken up their responsibility, have I not to look after their welfare?
"That's why I make japa; and I pray to the Master, 'Master, give them enlightenment, grant them liberation. This world is full of great misery, may they not have to come again.'..."
As she spoke thus, she would sit up and continue with reference to them, "They take the mantra with so much sincerity; but why do they not practice at all? Not that it is very hard. If one but sticks to a little practice, how much joy comes to one! Ah! with what joy and for how long Jogen (Jogin-Ma) and myself used to make japa at Vrindaban! Flies sat on our lips and eyes and made sores; but we had no consciousness."
