On another occasion, when Mother was at Koalpara, revered Swami Maharaj (Swami Saradananda) sent Rashbihari Maharaj (later Swami Arupananda) to her with some mangoes. Soon after his arrival he came to salute Mother. After inquiring generally about his health and welfare, Mother asked, "Well, my dear, what's the news of the War (World War 1914-18)? what a terrible loss of life! What a machine for killing people they have devised!
"What a lot of gadgets and machines nowadays - telegraphy and all that! Look, for instance, how Rashbihari left Calcutta yesterday and reached here today. How we toiled and trudged on in those days to reach Dakshineswar!"
Encouraged by this, Prabodh Babu (Headmaster of the High School at Badanganj) began an enconium of Western education and science and lastly he said, "The British Government has increased the general welfare in our country."
Mother had been nodding assent all along, but now she said, "But, my son, although these advantages are there, the want of food and clothing has increased very much in our country. It was not so acute in olden times."
