Sarayubala Devi:

24 March 1920:

Mother had been living in her village home and returned to her Baghbazar house in the month of FAlguna (February-March), after nearly a year's absence. For a long time she had repeated bouts of fever - malaria they said. She was in the washroom when I arrived. As she came out she said to me, "Wait, I shall be with you."

About five minites later she came and stood in the southernmost room, where her bed had been made. As I bowed to her feet, she touched my head and blessed me and said, "Sit down, my child, how are you?" I gave her some money which she accepted with her own hands. When I saw the state of her health, I could barely speak, I only gazed at her face and wondered that she could be reduced to this!

Mother had grown so weak that she seemed to have to make an effort even to speak. I was sitting on the floor. In the meantime Rashbihari Maharaj came in and warned Mother not to talk too much, still she continued to ask a few questions from time to time.

I answered as briefly as possible and remained seated there, when Radhu arrived carrying her sick boy. I put a small gift in the little boy's hands, but Radhu was most unwilling to accept it. "What is this, Radhu?" Mother reprimanded her. "Your sister is giving you something in token of her affection and you will not accept it? With this, she took it and put it away herself. Then she lamented that the child was ailing only because his mother and grandmother could not give him regular care and diet. Radhu protested most rudely, and Mother said, "There's no use saying anything to her," and fell silent.
