A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"Â
(available at all Vedanta Centres)
Another day Mother was telling her beads in the little veranda overlooking the lane. Evening was drawing in when one of the labourers living in the plot of land across the way evidently had a quarrel with his wife and continued to knock her about till at last the woman rolled down on the courtyard with the child in her arms.Â
His kicks followed her even there. Mother could not bear this. She stopped her prayers and delicately modest as she was who never raised her voice so as to be heard from downstairs, she went and leaning over the railings sharply rebuked the man, "Why you wretch, do you want to murder her, then?"
The man had been beside himself with fury, but he glanced at her, lowered his head and immediately walked away from the woman. The woman, touched by the sympathy in Mother's voice, burst into tears.Â
We learnt that her only offense had been that the rice was not ready in time. Later on when the man had calmed down, there was a scene of reconciliation, after which we went indoors.
