Radhu's mother came in and said, "Lakshmimani (a niece of the Master) and the others are going to Navadvip, but you won't let me go with them!" With this, she went off in a pique.




 




"How can I let her go?" Mother said. "Lakshmi is a votary, she will sing and dance with the other votaries and will take her meals without regard for caste or creed."




 




"Radhu's mother would not understand any of it," she said to me, "but would come back and spread gossip about Lakshmi. Have you met Lakshmi?"




 




"No, Mother," I replied. 




 




"She is at Dakshineswar, go and have look at her," she said. "You must have been to Dakshineswar?"




 




"Yes, Mother, many times, but I did not know she was there."




 




"Have you seen the room below the music tower, where I used to live?" Mother asked.




 




"I have seen it from the outside only," I answered.




 




"Go inside and have a look. My whole house-hold was in that single room...
