Jayrambati, 28th March, 1913:
We were having our evening meal. Mother had prepared a dish of potatoes and some other vegetables. She brought it to us saying, "See what this tastes like." I tasted a little and said, "Just like invalid's food, cool and bland. Who cooked it? Mother replied, "I did."
"With your own hands?"
"well," I said, "it is nothing special. People from our parts would not care for it."
"try just the gravy," Mother said.
"Aunt, you never use red pepper," Nalini commented. "How can he eat it?"
"Now, don't listen to him," Mother said to her. "When you taste it yourself you will like it."
I continued, "For some days I have been making inquiries about which dishes you have cooked and trying them out. But they all taste the same."
"Very well," Mother said, "one day I shall cook as they do in your parts, so there! One has to put more red peppers, isn't that it?"
"But not too much," I warned her. "Anyway, the taste need not be bad even if there is not enough red pepper." Whereupon Mother said to Nalini, "Get some peas (gram) tommorrow, I shall cook. I used to be quite a good cook, now I am getting out of practice."
