Sarayubala Devi:

14 May, 1911:

I had not been able to visit Mother for some time owing to pressure of work at school. After many a long day I went to see her today and sat at her feet. She immediately began to caress me affectionately. Bhudeb (a nephew of Mother's) was reading from the MahAbhArata. He was still a child and faltered over his reading, whereas the Mother was in a hurry as it was growing late. So she said to Bhudeb, "Give the book to her, she will read it as smoothly as flowing water. I can't get up without finishing the chapter, as you know."

At Mother's command I sat down to read from the MahAbhArata. I had never read to her before. I felt rather shy, but managed to finish the chapter somehow. Then Mother folded her hands, bowed to the book and arose. We all went to the prayer room to watch the evening worship. Mother took her usual seat for japa.

When prayers were over, she repeated the name of God and after making her obeisance, distributed the offerings among all those present.
