A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"
(available at all Vedanta Centres)
31 January, 1913:
The ladies who had come to see Mother were talking on the veranda on the north of the Master's room. There was too much noise. Mother said to me, "Go and tell them, dear, to lower their voices. They might wake Sharat (Swami Saradananda)."
Finding myself alone in the room with Mother, I asked her about prayer, meditation, and realization. She replied, "Look upon the Master and myself as non-different and meditate on the vision that you get at any time and pray accordingly. Worship ends with absorption in meditation. Start here (the heart) and end here (the head). Mantras and rites are nothing, my dear; all that matters is faith. You will find your guru and your God in the Master. He is everything."
We began to talk about Gouri-Ma and Durga Devi. Mother praised them and said, "You see, my dear, many people seek God only after disappointment in other spheres. But he, who from childhood can place at the Master's feet a heart as pure as a flower, is blessed indeed! That girl is like an untouched flower. See, how Gourdasi has trained her. Her brothers tried their hardest to get her married. Gourdasi took her and stayed in hiding here and there. In the end, she took her to Puri and there made her exchange garlands with the Lord JagannAtha and thus turned her into a sanyaAsini! Such a good and virtuous girl and well-educated as well! I understand she will be sitting for some examination in Sanskrit too!"
