Another day it was the Akshaya-trityA. The same elderly married lady and her daughter-in-law came in, freshly bathed, and advanced to place some strands of sacred thread and a few fruits in Mother's hands.
Mother said, "Why to me? Please give them to Bhudeb." After a little conversation, she turned to us and said, "On this holy day, I bless you, that your souls may be freed from the bonds of life and death. Life and death are full of pain, may you never suffer them again."
I went to see Mother one morning during the DurgA pujA holidays and found her very busy. She asked me to sit down and sent for a disciple who had arrived from Ranchi. The disciple came upstairs with fruits, flowers, gifts of cloth, and a garland of artificial roses made of cloth which looked eactly like real roses in full bloom. He requested Mother to wear the garland around her neck and she did so. Just then Golap-Ma came in and started to scold the disciple because the wiring on which the flowers were strung might hurt Mother.
The disciple was much embarassed, whereupon Mother, always full of compassion, reassured Golap-Ma saying, "No, no, it doesn't hurt me. I put it on over my sAri." The disciple bowed and went downstairs.
