Sarayubala Devi:

Just then Bhudeb returned from school with a fever. Mother asked me to make up a bed for him. I did so. Mother had to go to Balaram Bose's house to see Ram Babu's mother, who was down with severe dysentery. She arose early and began to finish her chores, saying, "I must go there; when Maku arrives please ask the school bus to wait for me."...

She went there with Golap-Ma and returned within an hour. In the mean time, someone had come to fetch me, but I waited for Mother's return. She came in and cried, "Here you are, my dear, I returned early on your account. Did you have any refreshments?"

"No, Mother"

"How so, Nalini, why did you not give her something? Did I not ask you to do so?"

"I forgot," said Nalini with a blush. "I forgot, I shall do so forthwith."

"No, let it be," Mother said. "You have no need to do so now. I shall do it. (to me} Why did you not ask for it, dear? This is as good as your own home." She brought me some of the consecrated sweets, which I ate with joy.
