Sarayubala Devi:

January-February, 1914:

Once more we fell to talking about mukti (freedom of the soul from the bondage of life and death). Mother said, "It is like candy in the hands of a baby. Someone tries to coax a bit out of his hands but he refuses, whereas he is unaccountably pleased with someone else and immediately makes a gift of the sweet!

"In the same way some strive all their lives and yet are unsuccessful, while others receive mukti as a gift. The moment He has compassiom, He gives. His grace is all that matters."

May, 1914:

Mother will come to our Ballyganj house today. We have been making preparations since yesterday. We have bought a new carpet seat for her and new white marble dishes. Mother is coming to our house! I could not sleep all night for joy. It had been arranged that she would arrive in the afternoon.

In case she changed her mind, Shokaharan had taken the carriage to her house at Baghbazar and was waiting for her from the morning, while we completed our household chores early and made ourselves ready.

I arranged Mother's carpet, placed flowers all around, sprinkled GangA water in all the rooms and doorways, strung garlands of flowers and placed two large bouquets on either side of Mother's seat.

(to be continued....)
