A READING from: "In The Company of The Holy Mother"

14 May, 1911:
Mother often gave initiation to her disciples, laughing all the while, either standing or seated. They too left immediately, happy and quite satisfied. Out of curiosity I have sometimes asked other disciples what Mother had looked like when they were initiated. A widow once told me, "Oh, just as usual. I had my initiation first from our hereditary guru. When I heard of Mother, I came here for initiation. She directed me to repeat the mantra of the hereditary guru for ten times. Then she gave me the mantra that she had to offer, and pointing to the Master said, 'He is the Guru'.
"Then showing another form she said, 'This is your chosen deity'. After that she asked me to pray, 'Master, you take away the burden of all I have committed in this life and the earlier ones.'"
And she went on to say, "Do tell me what is the matter with me. I can't repeat my prayers longer than half an hour at a stretch; something seems to shove me out of my seat. Does this happen to you? I would like to say so many things to Mother, but I find I cannot say anything. You seem to talk with Mother quite freely. Is she evading me?" - I had not wanted to know all this. The lady in question was fairly advanced in years and spoke very simply. I said, "Why do you not say whatever you wish? With a few days' practice you will find yourself at ease with her. In the beginning we could not speak freely, either. Even now, she sometimes looks so grave that we dare not come very close to her."
