Sarayubala Devi:

18 September, 1912 :

As I ate from my sAl leaf (the refreshments offered by Mother), I though of the godly Nag Mahashaya and said to Mother, "Mother, whenever I eat of the offerings from a sAl leaf, I remember *Nag Mahashaya."

(*A devotee of the Master who once swallowed the sAl leaf along with the consecrated food - Publisher.)

"O, his was such a deep devotion," Mother remarked. "See how dry and withered this sAl leaf is. Would you think anybody could eat it? Because it had been in contact with food consecrated to the Master, he would eat it devoutly! Such eyes of love he had! Reddish in colour, always shedding tears, and his body worn away by severe asceticism! When he came to see me, he would be so moved that he could hardly climb these stairs. He would tremble like this, and lose control over his footsteps. I have never seen such deep devotion."

I said, "I have read of him that when he gave up his medical practice and spent all his time deep in meditiation about the Master, his father cried one day, 'And what will you do next? Now go about naked and eat frogs!'

"There was a dead frog in the courtyard, whereupon Nag Mahashaya threw off all his clothes and picking it up ate it raw and said to his father, 'See, how I obey both your orders. Please do not trouble yourself any more about my needs, but see to the welfare of your own soul.'"
