Sarayubala Devi:

18 September, 1912 :

I am so busy with my work in Gouri-Ma's school that I cannot manage to visit Mother as often as I would like to. I had a little time on my hands on RAdhAshtami day and went there. Mother was then getting ready to bathe in the GangA and was rubbing oil on herself in the adjoining room...

Seeing me she cried, "Come in, dear, come in. I am glad you have come in the morning. Today is RAdhAshtami, a good day. Sit down dear, while I go for my dip."

When I said that I would like to go with her, Mother said, "Come, then."

But Golap-Ma would not let me go as it was raining in drops, whereupon Mother supported Golap-Ma's point and said, "Then let it be, dear, I shall be back in no time."

So I had to stay behind. I often noticed that like a simple bride, Mother would never press forward her own opinion against other people's. Anyway, the rain stopped as soon as Mother reached the road and the moment she returned and said to me, "It stopped raining as soon as we set out and I remembered with regret that you had wanted to come. It would have been nice if you had; you would have seen the holy river."

To tell the truth, however, it was more for the sake of Mother's company than seeing the holy river, that I had wanted to go!....

(to be continued....)
