Sarayubala Devi:

14 May, 1911:

With Mother's approval I did go once to see Gouri-Ma's school. She received me most affectionately and urged me to come for a couple of hours every day in order to teach the girls.

I replied, "It will be quite a joke to turn teacher with my limited knowledge. Just to please you, I could teach them their alphabet of course."

But Gouri-Ma would not let me go. In the end I had to agree. One day I went straight from Gouri-Ma's Ashrama after school to see Mother. It was summer and I was a little tired that day. I found her in her room surrounded by a crowd of women devotees. As soon as I had bowed to her, she looked at my face and quickly took a fan down from the top of the mosquito curtain and began to fan me. Anxiously she said, "Do take your blouse off at once, let the breeze cool your body."....

The more I cried, "Please let me have the fan, I can fan myself", the more she said in loving tones, "Never mind, dear, never mind. First cool yourself." She would not rest until she had brought me some sweets from the offerings and a glass of water. The school carriage was waiting, so I had to take my departure after interchanging a few words.

(to be continued....)
