Sarayubala Devi:

15 June, 1912 :

It was nearly four in the afternoon and Mother was seated with a number of women devotees around her, talking to them smilingly.....As soon as she saw me she cried, "Here you are, dear, do come in and sit down."

I sent Gouri-Ma to fetch the two books Nivedita and Bharate Vivekananda from the office downstairs. I want Mother to hear some passages from Nivedita. Seeing the books Mother asked, "Now, what book is that?"

"Nivedita," I answered.

"Read, my dear, I would like to listen," Mother said. "They sent a copy for me too, but I have not heard it read as yet."

Though I felt rather shy about reading aloud to so many people, still out of my own eagerness and because of Mother's command I began to read to her what Saralabala had written so touchingly. Holy Mother and all the ladies present listened. When I read about Nivedita's devotion everybody's eyes filled with tears. I saw the tears slipping down from Mother's eyes.

She continued to say, "How great was Nivedita's devotion! She could not do enough for me! When she came to see me at night, she would shade the lamp in my room with a piece of paper, in case the light hurt my eyes. She would bow down before me and with great care gather the dust from my feet in her handkerchief. Methought she felt diffident about touching even my feet."

After saying this Mother remained silent for a few minutes, thinking about Nivedita......

(to be continued....)
