Jayrambati, 28th March, 1913:
We were at our midday meal. The Mother's crazy sister-in-law had placed a seat and a glass of water for a child on her own veranda. Every time she filled the glass with water, a cat came and drank from it. Aunt was furious and cried out that she would kill the wretched cat! Mother was near by and she said, "No, no, dont hinder a thirsty creature. Besides, he has already touched that water."
The crazy aunt shouted, "Don't waste your pity over a cat. How much pity have you for human beings? Why don't you have pity on men?"
Mother became serious and said, "The person I don't pity is miserable indeed! I don't know on whom I have no pity - even to the meanest creature."
