Swami Arupananda:

Jayrambati, 18 December, 1909: It was nine in the morning. We were sitting on Mother's veranda, she fixing betel-leaves, I eating puffed rice. Later we talked.

"Mother," I said, "do not keep me long this time."

"You may go with me if you have no desire to remain," she replied. "Everyone will go when the time comes."...

"Take me with you this time," I said. "Next time the Master comes, I shall come with him."

Mother laughed and said, "But I am not coming again."

"I shall come whether you do or not," I said. "I like to come back."

"Well, you may not want to return when the time comes. What is there in this world? Tell me what is good in this life? That was why in the end the Master took only bitter things. I would try to give him sandesh (sweetmeat) and he would say, 'What is there in sandesh? It is just the same as clay.'"

(to be continued....)
