Swami Arupananda:

Uncle Varada came and told me that Holy Mother wished to see me. I went inside and found her waiting for me at the door. "Where did you come from?" she asked as soon as I had bowed to her.

I told her the name of my district. "So you devote your time nowadays to the Master's work?" Mother asked. I could not answer. She spoke as though we had known each other for a long time. I still remember her affectionate glances.

"Are you a kAyastha?" she asked, though I had wrapped up my whole body because of the cold. "Yes," I answered. "How many brothers have you?"

"There are four of us."

"Sit down and have some refreshments." With these words she placed a carpet for me on the veranda and brought me a small dish containing a portion of last night's offerings of luchis and molasses.

I had walked from Tarakeswar the day before and had reached Deshra, to the north of Jayrambati, in the evening. A boy from Deshra was with me. I had met him at the railway station at Haripal and spent the night with him.
